Sam Kaplan

Another photographer I found was Sam Kaplan who is another still life photographer. He did a theme of 'Milestones' where he took photos of candles with different ages on and then did another photo which related with that age. For example, the age 16 had the link of deodrant and tampons to help relate to children going through puberty. He used colourful yet subtle backgrounds which I felt helped make his images stand out. I am going to respond to Sam's 'Milestone' theme in order to meet my 'Numbers' theme as age is an important number. It would also help an idea I had of representing the meanings of numbers; e.g. the number 7 having a still life of lucky things.

I really like the simplicity of his candle photographs because your eye is drawn straight to the main focus of the candle. You look straight at the number which is why it would be good for my work as people will know straight away that my photography theme is numbers.
The colours were a plain grey background in order to make the colours of red, green, yellow and blue from the candle stand out.
Even though I do love this photo, I would improve it by having the whole candle on show so it's not cut off at the bottom because I feel it ruins the image.

This second image of the deodrant and tampon is a strong image because it bluntly represents the objects related to the age of 16. As the background colour is subtle, the objects stand out due to the high contrast of black and pink. I do feel like the image is plain as there are only two objects, so to improve it I would add in a few more objects such as a sanitary towel or condom.
