My still life work wasn't going as well as I had planned. I struggled to set it out creatively and I never seemed to have chance to go into the studio. Therefore, I decided on changing my photos so they looked more abstract to get people thinking what it could be. Chris Jordan was a perfect role-model for me to do this idea. He works in Seattle and takes abstract photos in order to represent something. An example is the photo below. This photo is an abstract photo of 139,000 cigarette buds to represent that is how many cigarettes are discarded every 15 seconds in the US. At first you see it as a grainy picture of some woods, but when you see the caption saying what it is you can look closely and see that they are cigarette buds. I love how he pictures something so beautiful but representing something very serious. I love the neutral colours used from the buds as it suits the theme really well; it matches the wood colour. Although there isn't much composition, the meaning of it makes it beautiful. I couldn't personally make any improvements to his work because it is so creative. His other photos are exactly the same but with different objects. The building blocks represent the amount of students who drop out of school, and the bottom picture is car keys representing the amount of gallons of gasoline used to burn down cars in the US every minute.
