Seasons

To start off my project development, I did a photo shoot on seasons. Sam Kaplan took still life objects of things that related to the different ages, so I linked this in with my work by taking photos of objects of seasons to relate to numbers. Seasons link to numbers because there are four of them which all last for a couple of months.
I found objects that related to spring, summer, autumn and winter and took abstract photos of them to link in my photographer, Chris Jordan. Below are my strongest photos for each season.

The first season is Spring, and that time is when flowers tend to bloom, but instead of using flowers I used allergy tablets. It still relates to spring because that is when allergy rates are highest.
I photographed the tablets close up so you are able to see the detail without having to strain your eyes, and it also gives it the abstract look I was going for.
I used an aperture of F/16 and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec because I was in the studio so I only needed to allow a little bit of light through. Tablets are plain colours so there isn't any bright colours in this image, only white and cream are in this picture.
When looking at this image, it doesn't remind me of spring. It isn't bright so it makes me associate the tablets with medicine or illness. Therefore, I decided to change this object for spring to flowers, as spring is when they bloom.

Here is the image of the flower I took photos of.
I had the composition in the middle so the whole flower was in view to make it the main focus.
I used an aperture of F/13 and a shutter speed of 1/20 sec because I was using natural lighting so I needed to allow a lot of it to come through the lens.
The colour in this image is bright yellow which I feel gives it the Spring feeling. I associate daffodils with Spring as the bright colours give it a warm, exciting feel.
The problem with this image is that I could get too close to the flower as it wouldn't focus, which meant I couldn't make it abstract. Therefore, to improve this image I would want the composition to be in a way that makes it difficult to realise what it is at first.

The next season is Summer and I used sun cream to represent this due to you needing to use it the most in summer.
I am showing two photos I have taken; one showing the front of the sun cream, and the second showing the nozzles.
The first image is a close up of two sun cream bottles as I tried to make it look abstract, but I didn't like how the writing was on show as it's distracting so I chose to take photos of the nozzles.
I used an aperture of F/29 and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec because I took this in the studio so I didn't need to allow too much light through the lens.
The colours in this photo are all bright yellows and oranges which I feel matches the Summer theme well. When I see these colours it reminds me of Summer as I associate it with brightness and excitement.
When looking at this image, I didn't feel like it was abstract enough as you can quickly tell it's sun cream, therefore I took the photo of the nozzles instead to make it more abstract.
I used an aperture of F/29 and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec as I used the studio and didn't need to allow too much light through.
The colours are the same bright orange and yellow which keeps the theme of Summer.

For Autumn I used an umbrella and scarf as that is the season where it starts to get cold and rainy. I positioned the objects so they were lined on top of one another so I could get a full length shot of them both as I felt it would make it look more abstract. I used an aperture of F/16 and a shutter speed of 1/25 sec as I was in the studio and didn't need to allow too much light through, and I had a narrow depth of field to capture the soft textures of the scarf.
The colours are black because I wanted the scarf and umbrella to match, and the skies tend to be darker when it's Autumn so it represents it.

To get a variety of photos I used just the umbrella to create this photo. I wanted to show the lines inside the umbrella to make it more abstract as it's harder to realise what it is. I used an aperture of F/16 and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec as I was in the studio so I didn't need to allow too much light through.
The colours are still black to keep the theme of a dark Autumn, but the textures are hard due to the handle and metal bars.
To improve this image I would change the position so it started from the bottom, as I feel it would look interesting.

The final season is Winter and I used Christmas cards to show this due to that time being in winter.
I had the composition in the middle to show the different heights of the cards.

I used an aperture of F/18 and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec because I had enough light but wanted a narrow depth of field to capture the hard texture and details of the card.

The colours in this photo are all pastel colours with light blues and purples which all blend together really well. It represents the innocence of Christmas and Winter.
I would improve this image by photographing it vertically so there isn't a massive white space like there it right now.

To give more variety for this season I changed the position so all the cards were inside one another but facing the front so you could see the pattern. This isn't as abstract as the other one but is very colourful and fun to look at.
I used an aperture of F/29 and a shutter speed of 1/125 sec as I wanted to capture the details which meant I had to have a narrow depth of field.
The colours are still pastel with a hint of bright red in the middle which I feel attracts your eye to the image as a whole.
I would improve this image by brightening it up as it looks quite dull, and would zoom out to capture more of the writing because most of the patterns are cut off which doesn't look good. It would also link in Annabelle Breaky if the lighting was bright because that is what she had done for her work.
